Villedieu les Poêles, the town where the metal sings.

Around 1130 Villedieu les Saultchevreuil became the first commandery in France.  Less than two centuries after the foundation of the commandery, one of the most dynamic copper workshops in an area otherwise devoid of copper ore was established.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, about 1700 fabricators were involved in copper pan production and due to this, Villedieu les Saultchevreuil became Villedieu-les-“Poêles”.

Today there are still three workshops in activity that are open to the public:  the Copper Workshop, the House of Pewter and the Bell Foundry. Here it is possible to discover the traditional and modern secrets of metal craftsmanship.

From the 18th century, the finesse and quality of the lace made in Villedieu had equally attracted an important clientele. There is still a school of lace in Villedieu ensuring that this exceptional skill is not lost.

From time to time a number of other artisans set up their businesses in Villedieu-les-Poêles and these include: potters, ceramists, glass blowers, artists, musical instrument makers, milliners and bead makers.....  The town of Villedieu-les-Poêles works hard to offer a privileged welcome to all new artisans.

Since 2010 the Artisanal Exhibition Centre has provided temporary exhibitions/sales in order to highlight the work of the local craftsmen and women.

Moreover every year Villedieu-les-Poêles plays an active part in “Les Journeés des Métiers d’Art” (The European days of National Heritage).
