The city of Cagnes-sur-Mer began for more than 20 years an action in favour of the contemporary jewel.

The Space Solidor, real casket situated in the medieval village is dedicated to it and welcomes regularly temporary exhibitions dedicated to this art still too much underestimated in France.

History
Created in 1991, the Solidor Art Space bears the name of the famous singer of cabaret Suzy Solidor who left Paris in 1960 to settle down in Haut-de-Cagnes. She opened an antique store ( the current gallery) and a cabaret (actually showroom adjacent to the gallery). The Grimaldi Castle presents moreover a collection of 40 portraits of this outstanding character.

It is in 1993 when the first exhibition of contemporary jewel is organized in Grimaldi Castle. The remarkable site of Haut-de-Cagnes, the quality of the exhibition and the interest which it arouses incite the city to begin works in 1999, to allow the gallery to welcome exhibitions of contemporary jewel. The Solidor Art Space was born. In 2008, the space is enlarged and two new rooms are created, of which one of documentation.

Cagnes-sur-Mer, pole of the contemporary jewel

Cagnes-sur-Mer is the only city in France certified " Ville et Métiers d’Art " for the contemporary jewel. This one acquired an international dimension by welcoming every year two or three temporary exhibitions dedicated to the biggest artists as to the young people full of future.

The biggest international names follow one another as Australian Robert Baines (Professor in Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology), German Karl Fritsch and Gerd Rothmann, but also Italian (Bruno Martinazzi, Annamaria Zanella), Israeli, Dutch, Japanese, American, Swiss and of course French (Goudji, Henri Gargat, Claude Pelletier, Arlette Baron, Gilles Jonemann, Frédéric Braham, Florence Lehmann, Françoise and Claude Chavent, Esty, Christophe Burger, Cathy Chotard).

A unique contemporary collection of jewels
A the temporary exhibitions go by, the City of Cagnes-sur-Mer acquired many jewels, what allowed it to constitute an exceptional collection of hundred of works. The biggest French and international names are present. This cultural policy in favour of the contemporary jewel is unique in France
