Capital of the Toy and town-center of the Child Land

The city of Moirans-en-Montagne (Jura), capital of the Toy and town-center of the Child Land (2 428 inhabitants), has carried out an ambitious policy for more than 20 years, declined in the cultural, educational and environmental fields. This political will, largely supported by the actions carried by the Local Council Community Jura Sud, is based on a tradition: the wood work and toy manufacturing.

The woodturning (art to turn wood) appears with the influence of the Abbey of Saint-Claude at the 13th century and the flood of pilgrims, who are at the origin of a strong demand of various piety objects in turned wood. Jura Forest and in particular the one of Moirans-en-Montagne, provide the essential resources to this production. In the course of time, the farmer-craftsmen diversified their products: chess, reels, buttons…

A few hundred years later, toy industry will emerge from this art to turn wood. The development of the toy in Moirans-en-Montagne is indivisible from the wood-turnery activity.

Today, this tradition is still present with the Toy Museum (Museum of France), entirely renovated in 2012 and in which craft and expertise have their place.

The Pierre Vernotte High School, by creating a “Crafts Patent” section in 1987, and then a certificate of Wood Crafts, attests this local will to develop expertise by formation and training. The graduates have the opportunity to settle in the business incubator called “l’Atelier au village”, located near the town-center.

In the same way, former students of this high school created the collective “Un Design, Un Meuble”, with its showroom based at the ground floor of the Town Hall. The local companies have the opportunity to contact the technological platform “TecBois”, located within the High School Pierre Vernotte too.

Beyond the structures, Moirans-en-Montagne and Jura Sud territory offer to visitors several events aiming to emphasize crafts and to federate the “alive heritage” companies.

In 2015, Moirans-en-Montagne, in partnership with the cities of Saint-Claude and Morez (also labeled “Ville et Métiers d’Art”), l’Atelier des Savoir-Faire of Ravilloles, the Natural Regional Park of Haut-Jura and the community of the Best Workers of France, welcome craftsmen of Haut-Jura within the framework of the Crafts European Days : about thirty craftsmen will present their expertise, their productions, will propose demonstrations and will work together to reach a realization from a collective work. This highlight will be organized within the High School which will get its open house during 3 days.
