BOUCHEMAINE,
WHERE ART AND HISTORY COME TOGETHER

Bouchemaine combines the peace of the countryside with the advantages of the city. The district consists of 3 villages located on the outskirts of Angers: Pruniers, Bouchemaine itself and La Pointe.  Due to its very special location at the confluence of two rivers, Bouchemaine is a remarkable town, full of charm. It should also be noted that Bouchemaine is now one of the Loire Valley districts inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

It is a pleasant place to live or to spend holidays:

  • Water-related activities: fishing, water sports centre, boat trips and river buses.
  • Activities close to nature: with the banks of the Rivers Maine and Loire for long walks or bike rides, visits to the Maison Départementale des Chasseurs (hunting centre) and Petit Serrant park with a children’s playground.
  • Art and culture: with its various exhibition halls, the Abbey, the Boîtes à Culture media complex and the Métiers D’Art art and craft open days at La Pointe.

La Pointe, with its nature discovery trail and river boats on the Loire, is now home to many artists and craftsmen.  This artists’ village has gradually developed to perpetuate its history. Once a summer retreat, the charm of La Pointe is omnipresent in the architecture of its villas and tiny summer houses, overlooking the panorama across the River Loire. Also a village of craftsmen, La Pointe today echoes the charm of days gone by:  a meeting place for people interested in arts and crafts.

With artists and craftsmen moving into the village, an association was set up called “Confluence des Arts”. This association consists of village artists and craftsmen of all types working in a variety of styles: blacksmith/art caster, sculptor, ceramist, flower arrangement specialist, calligrapher, reed grower/basketmaker, glass blower, jeweller, illustrator, painter, graphic illustrator and fashion designer, etc.

The Confluence gallery, located on Place Ruzebouc in La Pointe, opened its doors in September 2015.

This gallery is managed directly by the Confluence des Arts association. This venue, with regular opening times, has works by several artists and craftsmen on show and houses the studios of some artists. Exhibits will delight inquiring minds and there are items for sale to suit all tastes and pockets.
At the end of June, the “A La Pointe de l’Art” exhibition is open to visitors and is held both in private gardens and the studios of artists and craftsmen around the village. An opportunity to discover new artists and craftsmen and enjoy a pleasant walk alone or with family and friends.

The Bouchemaine district provides considerable support to craftsmen in the form of financial aid, in particular, with the organisation of a Christmas Market to enable artists and craftsmen to promote their activities, as well as via the district magazine where their work is highlighted in every edition.
